Editorial Policy

"Mr. President" is our regular online column addressed directly to President Barack H. Obama. It was inaugurated and published on May 22, 2009 in our twin websites www.philpress.net and www.hermierotea.com that practice Internet Journalism. It fills the gap left by some sectors of the mainstream media that have abdicated their traditional role as public watchdog to report facts and truth or comment on vital issues without fear or favor.
As this is written the late Joseph Pulitzer, the acknowledged titan of American journalism in whose name and honor the most prestigious Pulitzer Awards for outstanding journalists are given yearly by Columbia University, must be squirming in his grave for the sorry state of American journalism today.
If the people of the United States are disenchanted with their government in Washington, that is because it is captive of special interests and lobbyists no matter who run the White House and the U.S. Congress. Professional politicians elected or appointed to high positions make and break promises and cannot be trusted. A weak, timid and cowardly media make them that way.
Thus we subscribe to what Thomas Jefferson aptly said, that when the people fear the government, that is tyranny; when the government fears the people, that is liberty.
This then is our editorial policy. To be factual, frank, and fearless. We don't belong to any political party, civic, legal, business or social organization. We consider journalism a labor of love. We believe that truth and independence are the key to press freedom and free speech. Writing is our life.
Here now is our inaugural edition of
"Mr. President" launched and published on May 22, 2009 that set the tone of our editorial policy. To view the other columns, click the link Mr. President Archive below. They are being compiled into a book as our humble contribution to American journalism.

Addressed to Barack H. Obama

By Hermie Rotea

By now you must have already realized that campaigning for president and governing as president are two different animals. What you said then and what you say now contradict each other. You have flip-flopped.
For example, you stated during the 2007 campaign that Iraq was a "stupid war" that should have not been waged. Now you have embraced it and thus legitimized war criminal George W. Bush's illegal, immoral and phony war on terror.
Of course you have set an elastic timetable for withdrawal. But what the heck, you are now the leader of the discredited Washington gang of old. In fact, you are already even creating your own Vietnam with the U.S. military surge in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The tragedy is that America is addicted to war in the same way that some people are addicted to drugs. Sixty percent of the national budget is spent to produce weapons of mass destruction and finance foreign wars.
U.S. military bases are all over the world.
Yet Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon failed to win the Vietnam war. Now Mr. President, what makes you think that the United States can win the war in Afghanistan where the former Soviet Union with more troops deployed there miserably failed in the 1980s?
Don't you know that the civil war-torn country, like Vietnam, has never really been conquered permanently and is in fact the graveyard of imperialism?
As George Santayana said, a nation that has not learned a lesson from history is doomed to repeat its mistakes.

So Mr. President, heed the lesson of history. Wake up and stop playing politics for expediency!

Meet Your Fellow Flip-Flopper
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich has demanded the resignation or ouster of current Speaker Nancy Pelosi for charging that the CIA had misled her about the waterboarding torture of suspected foreign terrorist prisoners. CIA Director Leon Panetta has contradicted her by stating that the CIA does not condone torture of detainees.
Mr. President, political sharks who smell blood are now circling your ship of state and maneuvering to sink it. Already Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has declared that the "honeymoon" is over and the opposition party is set for the kill. They see the Pelosi-Panetta dispute as a good opening for the attack.
Who better than Gingrich can lead such political offensive? The architect of the so-called "Contract with America" revolution and now a Republican presidential aspirant, said that Pelosi should resign or be ousted because she had lied that the CIA had not actually briefed her, just informed her, about the waterboarding torture of suspected terrorists, which is illegal.
As Gingrich put it, Pelosi committed a crime because "it is illegal to lie to Congress." Well said, Mr. ex-Speaker.
But wait a minute. Did not Gingrich himself accuse former President Bush of lying to the American people about his "phony war" on terror? Yes Gingrich did. That is a direct quote from him early in the 2007 presidential campaign when he was testing the political waters.
Bush did lie that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. He also lied that Afghanistan was involved in 9/11 although it was Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda network that had perpetrated such terrorist attacks.
Yet he used this reason and deception to invade and occupy Iraq and Afghanistan although both countries had nothing to do with 9/11.
So Gingrich's double standard is apparent. He demanded the resignation or ouster of Speaker Pelosi for allegedly lying about her charge that the CIA had misled her about the torture of detainees. But he let then President Bush get away with lying about his phony war on terror.

You Are a Changed Man
Mr. President, doubting Thomases now say that they don't recognize you anymore. In your campaign for president you pledged to change Washington and politics as usual. Instead, Washington has changed you.
At first everybody thought you were a far-left guy who had associated with such radicals like Bill Ayers, the 1960s leader of the homegrown terrorist group Weatherman who had bombed The Pentagon.
You also associated with the Rev. Jermiah Wright who had "God Damn America!" repeatedly in his church sermons, and who was your own pastor who had performed your marriage ceremony with your wife Michelle, and whom you later disowned when he became too hot to handle.
Now you are being labeled as a pragmatic leader or moderate, a middle-of-the-road guy. Whatever you really are, Mr. President, you have in fact already embraced the shenanigans of your cowboy predecessor from Texas, where there is a current movement to secede from the United States because they don't like your tax-and-spend "socialistic" policy.
Are you trying to be like Robin Hood who robs the rich and gives to the poor?

Watch For O'Reilly and Hannity
Fox Cable News led by talk show hosts Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity have been consistently attacking you for remaking America as a socialist nation patterned after European countries that take care of their peoples from the cradle to the grave with their socialistic policies. Americans are beginning to wonder if you are really charting the ship of state in that same direction.
Mr. President, you are acting like Donald Trump in his TV Apprentice series. You have in fact already fired some CEOs at Wall Street with the government takeover of some giant banking, insurance and auto corporations as the majority owner.
Your "socialistic" policy has even provoked the birth of a modern "Tea Party Movement" in protest against your taxation reminiscent of the historic Boston Tea Party of 1773 that ignited the events that led to American independence from England in the crucible of 1776.
    Is history repeating itself?
Have a nice day, Mr. President.
